Een therapeutische tuin is steeds een healing garden.
“Healing gardens differ somewhat from therapeutic landscapes, which is another term used in healthcare. Therapeutic landscapes or gardens are designed to meet the particular needs of a specific patient population. They often engage that population actively and deliberately. Healing gardens, on the other hand, generally aim for a more passive involvement and are designed to provide benefits to a diverse population with different needs”(Clare Cooper Marcus).
Helende tuinen richten zich op een algemeen publiek met als invalshoek recreatie, ontspanning,… (healing gardens). Deze benadering is hoogst waardevol maar heeft geen specifiek therapeutische doelstellingen.
Een therapeutische tuin is een helende tuin met als surplus de specifieke inrichting voor therapie (bereiken van welbepaalde doelen voor bepaalde doelgroepen)

Situatie in Vlaanderen
Organisatie Werking Zorgboerderijen - de focus ligt voornamelijk op de werking van zorgboerderijen. Volkstuinen - het tuinieren als zinvolle en gezonde vrijetijdsbesteding centraal stellen - de aanleg van volkstuinparken stimuleren. Warme Tuinen - een knusse volkstuin, maar dan binnen de muren van een zorgvoorziening. Zorgtuinen/zorgnatuur - ecologische zorgtuinen nabij woon- en zorgcentra en ziekenhuizen - zorgnatuur bij woonzorgcentra Tuintherapie & therapeutische tuinen - tuintherapie en therapeutische tuinen op de kaart te zetten in Vlaanderen. Samentuinen/school-moestuin/deeltuin - opzetten van samentuinen in Vlaanderen en Nederland; Een samentuin is een tuin waarin mensen samen ecologisch tuinieren.
